There are two primary types of tow trucks used across Australia: traditional tow trucks (also known as hook-and-chain or wheel-lift tow trucks) and tilt tray tow trucks (also called flatbed or slide tray trucks). Each type serves a unique purpose and comes with its own advantages.

Traditional Tow Trucks: Reliable and Efficient for Short Distances

Traditional tow trucks are the image most people associate with towing — a robust truck fitted with a lifting mechanism that secures and lifts either the front or rear wheels of a vehicle off the ground, allowing the vehicle to roll on its remaining wheels during transit.

How They’re Loaded…

Traditional tow trucks use a hydraulic boom with a hook and chain, or a more modern, a wheel-lift system. The operator positions the lifting equipment under the front or rear wheels of the disabled vehicle. Once secured, the lift raises the wheels off the ground, and the vehicle is towed behind the truck with the remaining wheels rolling on the road.

This loading process is typically quick and ideal for roadside breakdowns, accidents where one set of wheels still move safely (front or back) or removing improperly parked vehicles.

Benefits of Traditional Tow Trucks

Tilt Tray Tow Trucks: Safe, Versatile and Protective

Tilt tray tow trucks are increasingly popular across Australia, especially for transporting luxury vehicles, machinery, or damaged cars. These trucks are equipped with a large flat tray that hydraulically tilts and slides to the ground, allowing a vehicle to be winched or driven directly onto it.

How They’re Loaded…

The operator tilts the flatbed tray downward until it touches the ground, creating a gentle ramp. The vehicle is then either driven onto the tray under its own power or winched up if it’s immobile. Once the vehicle is fully positioned, the tray is returned to a flat, horizontal position and secured for transport.

This method ensures the vehicle is completely off the road surface and transported securely on the tray.

Perfect for long distances: The vehicle experiences no wear and tear during transport, making it perfect for interstate or long-haul jobs.

While slightly more expensive than traditional tow trucks, the protection and versatility offered by tilt tray towing often outweigh the cost—especially when the cargo is valuable.

When to Use Which Tow Truck?

Use a Traditional Tow Truck When:

• The vehicle is parked illegally or needs urgent removal.
• You’re located in a tight urban setting where space is limited.
• Your vehicle is only being moved a short distance.
• You’re looking for a quick and budget-friendly towing option.

Use a Tilt Tray Tow Truck When:

• The vehicle has low ground clearance or can’t roll safely.
